Course description:
This 3-day training course will provide an introduction to upstream processing with hands-on practical and theory in cell culture and bio-manufacturing.
The general aims of this course are to enable a non-expert in the field of upstream processing:
- To be able to understand what a bioprocess is
- To have the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to know what types of bioreactor to use at which stage of a process and for what purpose
- To provide the basis for more advanced studies to become an expert in the field (if desired)
- To enable people in DSP to transfer to USP
Who should attend?
This course is aimed for operators, technicians, specialists in other areas, QA specialists, and managers in the field of bio-manufacturing who are interested to learn more about the upstream processing, to refresh their knowledge in the field, or to facilitate cross-training.
What are the learning outcomes?
To understand:
- The properties of different cell types and when they are used in biopharmaceutical applications
- What proteins are and how they are made
- How to make cell banks and define seed trains
- Functions of bioreactors, when and why they are used and, in particular, the difference between re-usable and disposable (single-use) bioreactors
- Bioreactors and determine the optimum type for each process
- What the different feeding regimes are: batch, fed-batch, continuous and perfusion
- How to control bioprocesses i.e. PAT
- Different techniques used for analysis of proteins and their properties
How is the course structured?
The course is a mixture of interactive presentations and hands-on practical work in a GMP-like environment. Practical work will be carried out in small groups with a maximum of 2-3 people per group to ensure hands-on experiences at all time.
Further information:
A certification will be handed out to each participant at the end of course.
Travel and accommodation are not included in the course fee. Flights can be booked to either Geneva or Zurich airport with a direct train connection from both airports to Fribourg.
Accommodation can be booked in the Alpha-Hotel (www.alpha-hotel.ch), which is only 5 minute food-walk away from the Biofactory Competence Center.
